The Alinari Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition L’Italia è un desiderio. Fotografie, Paesaggi e Visioni (1842-2022). Le Collezioni Alinari e Mufoco, from June 1st to September 3rd, 2023, at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, in collaboration with MUFOCO - Museum of Contemporary Photography.

The exhibition focuses on landscape, understood as an identifying feature of Italian culture and a favourite subject of nineteenth-century artistic experimentation in both painting and photography. The exhibition starts with photographs from the Alinari Archives and continues with works from the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, thus transforming itself into a veritable journey through Italy.

Over 400 works are on display, including original plate negatives, autochromes, vintage prints, fine art prints from original negatives, large-format colour prints and other contemporary methods of presenting images. In addition to allowing the public to discover and appreciate an extraordinary variety of materials and techniques, these works will take visitors on a journey through the evolution of how Italy has been represented.

The exhibition is enriched by a series of ‘sparks’, moments of direct and unexpected dialogue between the two collections.

The exhibition is the result of a significant collaboration between the Scuderie del Quirinale, the Fondazione Alinari and the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea; the latter are two of Italy's leading public institutions dedicated to the conservation, study and promotion of photography, united by the aim of creating a national network around photographic heritage.
