HIP-S-000233-0076 Rare Anglo-Saxon aestel or manuscript pointer, 9th century. A sphere of rock crystal in a cruciform gold mount, found near Warminster, Wiltshire. It is similar to several pointers commissioned by Alfred, King of Wessex (871-899 AD) and sent out to the dioceses of the kingdom with his translation of Pope Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care.
