news | Per forza di levare - exhibition opening at CARMI in Carrara
Fondazione Alinari is pleased to announce the exhibition Per forza di levare. Michelangelo scultore nelle fotografie degli Archivi Alinari, which will be held at CARMI - Museo Carrara e Michelangelo, Via Sorgnano 42 in Carrara, from April 18, 2025 to October 26, 2025.
The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the CARMI museum, is curated by Rita Scartoni, with the scientific advice of Cristina Acidini, and is dedicated to the artistic work of Michelangelo Buonarroti, an undisputed icon of the Renaissance art, in the year in which the Region of Tuscany celebrates the 550th anniversary of his birth.
The project, promoted by the Municipality of Carrara in collaboration with our Foundation, reveals how the Alinari Brothers, Brogi, and Anderson, the great editors of the 19th century, immortalised the masterpieces of the "Divine Artist", tackling the challenge of translating the three-dimensionality of sculpture through the medium of photography.
This is a unique exhibition, highlighting unexpected visual interpretations, which are the result of the encounter of Michelangelo's genius with that of photographers, engaged in the surveying and communication of Italy's historical-artistic heritage.
The exhibition consists of a careful selection from the collections of the Alinari Archives: about 70 fine art prints, plus a small nucleus of original prints. The itinerary covers 120 years of photography, starting from 1852.
Opening hours:
From September 15th to May 31st: open Tuesday to Sunday 9am-12pm and 2pm-5pm.
From June 1st to September 14th: open Tuesday to Sunday 9:30-12:30 and 17:00-20:00.
Closed on Mondays.
