Elephant armour (bargustawan), Indian (Mughal), c1600. This armour, shown on display in the Royal Armouries Oriental Gallery, Leeds, is of mail and plate construction. It was probably made in one of the arsenals of the Mughals in North India in the late 16th or early 17th century. It is now composed of some 5840 plates and weighs 118kg. When complete it would have weighed about 159kg. The plates are decorated with elephants, a lotus, a peacock and with pairs of fish forming the bottom row. Elephant armours are recorded in India during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire and in Persia under the Timurids *** Local Caption *** XXVIA.102, Archive, Elephant armour

Armet, Austrian, Innsbruck, 1512-14. Made by Konrad Seusenhofer of Innsbruck, one of the finest armourers of the early 16th century, this horned helmet is all that remains of an armour presented to King Henry VIII by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. A pair of brass spectacle frames is bolted over the eyes and the mask is humorously etched with stubble, eyebrows and creases at the corners of the eyes. It is highly decorated and was probably made for the court pageants rather than for use in combat. Henry VIII might have worn it during the sumptuous functions such as masques and pageants which accompanied tournaments. *** Local Caption *** IV.22, Archive
