1924, LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN : The russian dancer and choreographer Bronislava Nijinska in LE TREAIN BLEU by composer Darius Milhaud at BALLETS RUSSES by DIAGHILEV, from a story by JEAN COCTEAU, costume design by COCO CHANEL, set decoration design by painter PABLO PICASSO with Henri Laurens. Nijinska played a leading role in the pioneering movement that turned against 19th-century Classicism, which paved the way for neoclassical works to come. She was the younger sister of the renowned dancer VASLAV NIJINSKY (1888 - 1950). The ballet was first performed on 20 June 1924 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, with Nijinska, who played a tennis player based on Suzanne Lenglen, Lydia Sokolova, Anton Dolin and Leon Woizikowski in the leading roles ; the orchestra was conducted by André Messager. The curtain was painted after Deux femmes courant sur la plage, a 1922 work by Pablo Picasso.
