1887, USA: The american abolitionist, social activist, novelist, woman writer and poet Julia Ward HOWE (1819-1910). Portrait from a photograph by J.J. Hawes (1808-1901), engraved by Caroline Amelia Powell. Most famous as the author of" The Battle Hymn of the Republic"(1862). After the war Howe focused her activities on the causes of pacifism and women's suffrage. From 1872 to 1879, she assisted Lucy Stone and Henry Brown Blackwell in editing Woman's Journal
