The Glynne family had owned the estate since the mid 17th century; following the death of Sir Stephen Richard Glynne, 9th Bart (1807-1874), the estate passed to his nephew, William Henry Gladstone, eldest son of William Ewart Gladstone. New Hawarden Castle, in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales was the estate of former British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, which previously belonged to the family of his wife, Catherine Glynne. It was built in 1752. Gladstone occupied this home until his death there in 1898. The castle and estate are still in 2011 a private residence (although some of the grounds are open to the public) and are still owned by the Gladstone family (the current proprietor is Sir William Gladstone). William Ewart Gladstone (1809 1898) was a British Liberal statesman. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times more than any other person. Gladstone was also Britain's oldest Prime Minister, 84 years old when he resigned for the last time. He had also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times (18531855, 18591866, 18731874, and 18801882). In this photo is the older man in top right side, standing
