French dragoon of the Napoleonic Wars, early 19th century. A corporal of the 16th Regiment of Dragoons, leaving camp. Pencil annotation indicates that for this regiment the plume should be red, not white as shown. In 1815 the 16th Dragoons formed part of General Maurin's 7th Cavalry Division, attached to Gerard's IV Corps. They took part in the Battles of Ligny (16 June) and Wavre (18-19 June), but failed to defeat the Prussian rearguard in time to have an effect at the Battle ofWaterloo.

The original castle consisted of the keep, seen here, which provided a series of gun platforms to protect Falmouth harbour and lodging for the governor. A large enclosing fortress was added in Elizabeth I's reign.

Fireplace and ornate mantlepiece in the saloon at Eaton Hall, Eccleston, Cheshire, 1887. Eaton Hall was remodelled in the Gothic style in 1870-1882 by Alfred Waterhouse for the Duke of Westminster. In 1963 the main part of the hall was demolished, and a new hall constructed. The chapel, clock tower and stables were retained.

In 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo this unit formed part of General Lefebvre-Desnouettes' Guard Light Cavalry Division, which took part in Marshal Ney's massed cavalry attack on the British lines. They had also been engaged at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16 June as scouts ahead of Marshal Ney's main body.

Walmer Castle was built by Henry VIII. It became the official residence of the Warden of the Cinque Ports, of which the Duke of Wellington was one in the 19th century.

Simon de Montfort held the castle in the mid 13th century, while in the 17th century it was the home of Robert Dudley, Earl of Essex and favourite of Queen Elizabeth. Many of the buildings date from this period.

Balcombe Viaduct, West Sussex, 1954. Designed by John Urpeth Rastrick and David Mocatta and built in 1841, the Balcombe Viaduct over the River Ouse on the London-Brighton line north of Haywards Heath is 1475 ft long and is carried on 37 semi-circular arches with pierced piers. Part of the Ouse Valley Railway.

Napoleon and his Imperial Guard, early 19th century. Engraving produced in Berlin. A parade of the French Imperial Guard being reviewed by Emperor Napoleon I. The infantry of the Imperial Guard were veteran troops considered to be the cream of Napoleon's army. Their repulse by the Anglo-Dutch army at the Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815) was the decisive moment that ended both the battle and ultimately Napoleon's return to power in France.
