1616, GREAT BRITAIN : Pocahontas (Virginia, 1595 ca Gravesend, 21 march 1617) as Mrs. John Rolfe, from a portrait painting done in London, England, 1616 by engraver artist Simon Van de Passe (ca. 1595 - 1647). Pocahontas (born Matoaka, and later known as Rebecca Rolfe, c. 1595 -March 1617) was a Virginia Indian.In an historical anecdote, she is said to have saved the life of an Indian captive, Englishman John Smith, in 1607 by placing her head upon his own when her father raised his war club to execute him.
