1776, 4 july, USA : The U.S.A. United States of America Declaration of Independence from England, signed by 56 delegates to the Continental Congress, author Thomas Jefferson et al. (Engrosser: Probably Timothy Matlack). John Trumbull's famous painting is often identified as a depiction of the signing of the Declaration, but it actually shows the drafting committee presenting its work to the Congress. While political maneuvering was setting the stage for an official declaration of independence, a document explaining the decision was being written. On June 11, 1776, Congress appointed a "Committee of Five", consisting of John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, Robert R.
