1951, 30 march , LOS ANGELES, USA : The american most celebrated OSCAR statuette of ACADEMY Award of Merit to movie director JOSEPH L. MANKIEWICZ (left)(1909 1993) and DARRYL ZANUCK (right), in center the United Nations 's Doctor RALPH BUNCHE (1903 - 1971) a diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel. Mankiewicz won Best Direction and Best Screenplay awards for ALL ABOUT EVE (EVA CONTRO EVA, 1950), wich Zanuck produced, also won the IRVING THALBERG MEMORIAL AWARD for outstanding movie achievement. An Academy Award is an accolade bestowed by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio boss Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industrys image and help mediate labor disputes.
