1904, USA : The russian Countess MARGUERITE CASSINI (1882 - 1961) in a fancy dress for a masquerade ball in costume. Photo by Frances Benjamin Johnston. Mother of most celebrated Hollywood Fashion Designer Oleg Cassini Loiewski (1913 - 2006) and gossip columnist journalist for the Hearst newspaper chain Igor Cassini (1915 - 2002). Countess Marguerite Cassini's father, Arturo Cassini, was an Italian-Russian aristocrat who served Tsar Nicholas II of Russia as foreign minister for China and ambassador to the USA. Her mother, a vaudeville singer, was considered déclassé by Russian society, and Marguerite sometimes served as her father's hostess at diplomatic events. She married Alexander Loiewski, another Russian diplomat, who adopted his wife's last name. She wrote her memoirs, entitled Never a Dull Moment (1956).
