1799, july, GREAT BRITAIN: The british poet and dramatist JOHN GAY (1685 1732). He is best remembered for The Beggar's Opera (1728), a ballad opera. In this engraving print from 1799 (pubblished in London, by J. Brydon) figure a miser looks at his hoard of gold through his spectacles, with six lines of poetry by J. Gay. A miser is a person who is reluctant to spend, sometimes to the point of forgoing even basic comforts and some necessities, in order to hoard money or other possessions. Although the word is sometimes used loosely to characterise anyone who is mean with their money, if such behaviour is not accompanied by taking delight in what is saved, it is not properly miserly.
