1900 ca, USA: The italian Genoese navigator and explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto, 1450 ca 1500 ca), in 1497 discovery of parts of North America under the commission of Henry VII of England is commonly held to have been the first European exploration of the mainland of North America since the Norse Vikings' visits to Vinland in the eleventh century. Father of venetian explorer SEBASTIAN CABOT (Sebastiano Caboto 1474 ca 1557). After his father's death, Sebastian Cabot conducted his own voyages of discovery, seeking the Northwest Passage through North America for England.
