1580 ca, GREAT BRITAIN: The british Sir WALTER RALEIGH (1554 ca 1618), landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. Engraved portrait by Charles Pye from the original painting by Sir Anthonis More, pubblished in London in march 1822. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England. Raleigh was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. Secret lover of Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh was instrumental in the English colonisation of North America and was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, which paved the way for future English settlements
