1740 ca, FRANCE: Portrait of french woman mathematician, writer and physicist Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil marquise du Châtelet aka Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749). Portrait engraved in XIX century. Her most recognized achievement is her translation of and commentary on Isaac Newton's book Principia containing basic laws of physics. Her philosophical magnum opus, Institutions de Physique (Paris, 1740, first edition), or Foundations of Physics. Posthumously, her ideas were heavily represented in the most famous text of the French Enlightenment, the Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond DAlembert, first published shortly after Du Châtelets death. Sharing a passion for science VOLTAIRE and Du Châtelet collaborated scientifically during a close friendship for more years
