1865 ca, Washington, D.C., USA: The THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE. The Smithsonian Institution Building, projected in 1845 began construction in 1849. Designed by architect James Renwick Jr., its interiors were completed by general contract Gilbert Cameron and the building opened in 1855. The building is constructed in the faux Norman style (a 12th-century combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs, built in the Gothic and Romanesque revival styles) and is nicknamed The Castle
