Portrait engraved by Hippolyte Garnier (1802-1855) from the original portrait by Robert Lefèvre (1755-1830), frontespice of Vivant Denon book" Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte", 1829. He was appointed as the first Director of the Louvre museum by Napoleon I after the Egyptian campaign of 17981801. His two-volume Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte ("Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt"), 1802, was the foundation of modern Egyptology.
