We are glad to announce the opening of the exhibition Fotografia Wulz. Trieste, the family, the atelier, curated by Antonio Giusa and Federica Muzzarelli, which opens to the public on Saturday, December 14, at the Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste.
The exhibition, organized by the Regional Body for Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with the Fondazione Alinari, presents a historic and critical selection from the archive of the Wulz Photographic Studio in Trieste (1868-1981), one of the most important archival complexes preserved today in the Alinari Archives, which became public heritage thanks to the acquisition by the Tuscany Region.
A photographic journey spanning over one hundred years, marked both by the events that placed the city of Trieste at the center of the international scenario and by the stages of its economic, demographic, social, and cultural development. A long history seen through the privileged lens of the Wulz family, who for more than a century managed the Trieste photographic atelier of the same name.
The exhibition opens to the public from December 14, 2024, until April 27, 2025, thus being included in the schedule of GO!2025&Friends, the event calendar linked to the official program of GO!2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia European Capital of Culture.
Thanks to the critical selection of the Alinari heritage made by the two curators and the presence of other materials from public institutions, such as the Wolfsoniana in Genoa, the Revoltella Museum, and the Civic Museums of History and Art in Trieste, as well as from private collections such as those of the antiquarian bookshop Drogheria 28 in Trieste and the Sergio Vatta Collection, this exhibition aims to provide new points of reflection and propose new or updated readings of the photographic production of the Wulz family.
Through almost three hundred items on view, including photographs, negatives, vintage prints, documents, and objects from the archive of the Wulz Photographic Studio, the exhibition gives us a Trieste that is in many ways unprecedented, a city immersed in a crucial historical period for its evolution, from the second half of the 1800s to the second half of the 1900s and beyond.
The images created in the last period of the studio's activity, by sisters Wanda and Marion Wulz, can be seen as an opportunity to concretely visualize the progressive changes in women's identity, who in the early decades of the twentieth century embarked on one of the most important phases of their journey towards emancipation and independence.
The exhibition is supported by the Calliope Arts Foundation, an organization committed to the safeguarding and promotion the cultural heritage of women. Calliope curates publications such as The Curators’ Quaderno, which will see the printing of a new issue dedicated to the Wulz sisters.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue published by Silvana Editoriale.
